Organo-transition metal compounds have great potential to be applied as emitting materials in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and make it possible to achieve high electroluminescence quantum yields. For the optimization of these emitters a detailed characterization of their photophysical properties and their emitting triplet states is necessary. As a new method of highly resolving spectroscopy the usage of superfluid helium droplets has become available in the last years. In the scope of this cooperation it is intended to investigate organo-transition metal compounds like Ir(ppy)3 and Ir(piq)3 in this unique matrix for the first time. It is further aimed to reveal the behavior of clusters of several emitter molecules and the interactions with the helium droplets.
